Bathrooms - Time to Detoxify Yours
Bathrooms may be places we wash away the dirt but the process of cleansing, washing and scrubbing as well as polishing and preening could in fact be damaging our health. A book by Kate Lock, Confessions Of An Eco-Shopper, examines how the products in our bathrooms could in fact be making us ill - even killing us.
Bathrooms: The Toxic Risks
Most of our bathrooms in fact are packed with chemicals and toxins. And the enormous amount of money we spend on the products that we use in our bathrooms could in fact not be helping us look younger, better and sexier, but Lock says, they could be doing the complete opposite. In fact the thousands of pounds spent on products for our bathrooms could be far better spent on natural alternatives to expensive make-up products. With over 80% of British women wearing make up daily, our bathroom cabinets are heaving with a wide variety of cosmetics and cleansers.
Bathrooms: Beauty Regimes
Lock has investigated what the impact on our health is as well as on our bank accounts. A quick peak in most people's bathrooms will reveal an impressive array of products. But according to the Women's Environmental Network, the beauty industry is selling products that contain ingredients that are damaging to fertility, linked to cancer and allergies and could in fact increase the effects of ageing.
Bathrooms: Go Eco
Many people don't think twice about the products in their bathrooms. Bathroom products are sold with the allure of being fresh, clean, rejuvenating, anti-ageing: a whole plethora of beauty and health connotations. But what we keep in our bathrooms include chemicals that are carcinogenic. Although all products in our bathrooms are safety-tested and certain chemicals are prohibited. But environmental campaigners say there are still dangerous chemicals that are putting our health at risk, such as parabens and phthalates.
Bathrooms: Food for Thought
Lock revealed even products used in bathrooms advertised as natural can contain just 1% of natural ingredients. Although many of the ingredients are considered safe by the cosmetics industry, there's a concern that a build up of the chemicals could be harmful. The growing concern about the ingredients used in our bathrooms has triggered campaigns such as the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. Lock argues that we should all be reading the labels on the products in our bathrooms, from shampoo to lipstick, and like food, we should start taking care about what we're putting in and on our bodies.
