Bathrooms - Room for Thought
Bathrooms are the ultimate refuge - rooms that you can retreat from the world in. Running a bath, locking the door, and switching off means that bathrooms are probably the best room in the house to spend some serious thinking time.
Bathrooms - The Power of Thought
Having time to think is crucial for our well being. And perhaps in our 24-7 culture, finding time to yourself has never been harder. When we relax in our living rooms or bedrooms, chances are we're filling the space with noise and distractions, watching TV. Bathrooms can force us to spend time thinking (even if it's thinking of nothing!). But thinking isn't just necessary to come up with great ideas, find solutions to problems or to do the crossword, it's crucial for our emotional and mental health.
Bathrooms - Think Hard
A recent BBC feature analysed a conversation between Barack Obama and David Cameron where the pair discussed the notion of thinking time. Time to think is crucial to contextualise problems and to look at the bigger picture. And the conversation triggered an investigation into the fact that in these modern days we barely have time to think. In fact, we snatch thinking time waiting for a bus, on a journey, at the doctor's waiting room and in our bathrooms. Grabbing thinking time can be hard, but bathrooms are the perfect place - most bathrooms have locks for privacy, perfect if you want uninterrupted time and space. In our bathrooms, we can lock out the rest of the family and avoid answering the phone with nobody but yourself to chat to in the bathroom mirror.
Lock yourself in your Bathroom
Aside from soaking in the bath, the reason for locking yourself in your bathroom is (you can argue) to safeguard your mental health. In the BBC story, Tony Buzan, the inventor of Mind Maps said: "If you don't give the brain breaks, it will take them in the form of loss of concentration, or what we call a mental breakdown." Taking time to think then is something definitely worth thinking about. Our bathrooms could well become a mental as well as physical sanctuary as doing our daily ablutions gives us time to ourselves.
As well as taking longer baths in our bathrooms, idler experts suggest taking your full lunch hour from work to head to a park, getting off public transport a stop earlier for a thoughtful walk, and setting aside dedicated thinking time.
